“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” – Peter Drucker

Remember when you used to wake up at 5 am for team weights? What about cramming a study session in to pass that exam to make sure you stay eligible for the game on the Saturday? Somehow you found a way to achieve those things. That degree says so. There wasn’t anything going to stop you from achieving your goals in college. My question for you is, when did you get so complacent?

You are probably wondering what has changed from that version of you as opposed to you now. Is it your new job? Is it your new girlfriend or boyfriend? Maybe it’s that you are retired from sports! NO, it comes down to ACCOUNTABILITY. Being great at your sport didn’t cause you to wake up each day. It was because you held yourself to the highest standard every day. Yes, you had coaches and teachers in your head. But, YOU woke up each day. YOU fought each day to improve. Your life depended it on it at the time. It is up YOU now to figure out how you can get back to that version of you.

First, you need to find out what you are doing wrong or what changed. What causes you to take days off? Why is it okay to eat out every day? Do you think that if you don’t have a game to prepare for you can be overweight? The “old” you wouldn’t have thought that way. You choose to eat lunch out with your coworkers instead of meal prepping. None of these things will help you. Trust me I settled right after college. I went out to every Taco Tuesday and stopped squatting at the gym. Before I knew it, I was gaining weight and feeling unmotivated. Going with the grain will get you burnt. You won’t recognize yourself in the mirror but that is on you. Something has to burn a hole inside of you so you can fight to get back. There are solutions to your problem.

GET OFF THE BENCH! Develop a new routine. Go back to the gym and lift more than everybody in there. Sign up for a 10k and crush it. Buy a new book on Amazon that will help you succeed. Meal prep on Sunday after your Costco/ Sam’s Club haul. Find a new hobby that will keep you competitive. Walk into your boss’s office and ask how can you move up in the company. Surround yourself with other athletes and push each other. (Subscribe to this Blog!) I read books, grew my network, and started golfing again. I got my competitive edge back. Be a starter in life, you didn’t ride the bench your whole career. Your new competition is you. Stay hungry. Stay strong.

You are more than capable of getting back to who you used to be. You can be an even better version of yourself on this new journey. Take the steps that are needed and you will get to where you want to go. It is a small moment of weakness. Don’t dwell on it. Accept where you are at now and move on in the right direction. You can still do this!
